The construction of the Heavy Vehicle Bypass began in late 2014 and was officially opened on 12 June 2015 by The Hon Joe Hockey MP, Federal Treasurer.
The Heavy Vehicle Bypass is a significant project for the region and will benefit our community greatly by removing, as much as possible, the presence of heavy vehicles on local and residential roads. The Bypass is expected to handle 120,000 road train movements annually.
The Bypass is a vital piece of infrastructure for the future transport needs of our community, linking Hensley Drive with the Flinders Highway, and has the ability to capture all heavy vehicle movements from the South, West and Northern areas of our Shire.
Cloncurry is the heart of the North West Queensland Mineral Province which produces 80 per cent of Queensland's mineral wealth, totalling $7.36 billion. According to the Queensland Resource Council, Cloncurry LGA is the largest royalties contributor in the North West and fourth largest in the state, generating around $119 million in royalties for the State Government each year.
The Cloncurry Heavy Vehicle Bypass is funded by the Federal Government Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development National Building Program and the State Government Royalties to the Regions program.
