Cloncurry Shire Council has adopted its 2026–27 Budget, delivering a balanced financial plan that continues to invest in critical infrastructure, community services and long-term economic growth while keeping rate increases as low as possible.

The budget includes a modest operating surplus of $5.47 million, which will be reinvested into capital renewal and future infrastructure projects. Council will deliver $120 million in capital works including a $85.6 million Capital Works Program, alongside a further $35.8 million in flood damage restoration works across the Shire.

For the majority of ratepayers, rates will increase by between 3 and 4 percent, with water, sewer and waste charges increasing by 4 percent.

Mayor Greg Campbell said Council had worked hard to balance community expectations, rising costs and the need for continued investment in essential services and infrastructure.

“Cost-of-living pressures remain a key concern for our residents. Council has made every effort to keep increases to rates and charges as low as possible while maintaining a strong and sustainable financial position,” Mayor Campbell said.

“We have achieved this through operational efficiencies, continued population growth, strong support from the mining and agricultural sectors, and our ongoing success in securing State and Federal Government funding.”

Investing in Growth and Infrastructure

A significant focus of the budget remains on roads and transport infrastructure, with more than $108.2 million, ($26.6 million on airport redevelopment) allocated to improving connectivity and maintaining critical transport corridors across the Shire.

Key projects include the completion of the Scarr Street Revitalisation, Child Care Centre, Incubator sheds, upgrades to Malbon-Selwyn crossings, flood damage restoration works, and planned upgrades at Cloncurry Airport, subject to funding agreements.

“Cloncurry is a major transport hub, and continued investment in our road network and transport infrastructure is essential to supporting our economy and community,” Mayor Campbell said.

“These investments demonstrate Council’s commitment to improving liveability, supporting economic development and ensuring our community has access to modern, reliable infrastructure.”

Supporting Community Wellbeing

Council will invest almost $3 million in community programs and services that help make Cloncurry a great place to live, work and raise a family.

Funding will support a broad range of initiatives, including childcare services, community events, swimming pool operations, investment attraction activities, housing incentives, health service support, library and gallery services, and the maintenance of parks, gardens and recreational facilities.

“Our community services program continues to be one of the strengths of our Shire,” Mayor Campbell said.

“Council remains committed to supporting local families, volunteers, community organisations and essential services that contribute to our quality of life.”

Environmental Management and Sustainability

Council will also continue investing in environmental and animal management programs, including weed and feral animal control, mosquito management and other environmental initiatives aimed at protecting the region’s natural assets and agricultural industries.

Free registration for desexed and microchipped pets during the annual discount period will continue, alongside initiatives that encourage responsible pet ownership and animal rehoming.

The budget also includes $1.2 million for plant and fleet replacement, ensuring Council can continue delivering services efficiently and effectively across the Shire.

Mayor Campbell said the 2026–27 Budget reflects Council’s commitment to balancing responsible financial management with strategic investment in Cloncurry’s future.

“This budget continues to deliver essential infrastructure, quality services and long-term planning that will support our community today and create opportunities for future generations.”
